What Is Bone Grafting?
Dental bone grafting is a surgical procedure that adds volume and density to the jawbone to support dental implants or treat bone loss after tooth loss or as a result of periodontal disease or injury. Bone grafting uses either natural or synthetic materials to create a foundation for new bone regeneration.
Why Is Bone Grafting Necessary?
The purpose of dental bone grafting is to rebuild, strengthen, or maintain jawbone density. Jawbone density can be lost due to tooth extraction, gum disease, or injury. It provides a stable, solid base for dental implants, enabling perfect fusion. Grafting also prevents structural changes to the face, such as a sagging jawline and additional tooth loss. Bone grafting is also used to treat bone loss caused by trauma or periodontal disease.
Is Bone Grafting Painful?
Dental bone grafting is not generally painful during the procedure because the dentist will administer anesthesia, and most patients report little to no pain during recovery. Some mild discomfort and swelling are normal for a few days, but any discomfort is usually manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.
The Bone Grafting Process
Bone grafting may be necessary for your dental implant treatment plan, especially if you do not have adequate jawbone density. The dentist will harvest healthy bone tissue from your own mouth or from an alternative donor source and place it in the affected area.
At North Tampa Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, we use bone morphogenetic proteins and leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) to accelerate recovery following a bone graft. Healing usually takes 3 to 6 months. Following post-operative instructions will ensure a comfortable recovery.
Bone grafts have a high success rate, so whether you need a bone graft to prepare for dental implants or to restore bone after gum disease, the procedure will create a base for long-term oral health.
