Occlusal Therapy, Tampa FL
When the teeth meet together in a healthy bite (also known as a healthy occlusion), bite forces are evenly distributed amongst all teeth in harmony. An abnormal occlusion is one in which excessive forces are placed on fewer teeth, leading to loosening of the teeth and bone loss. An occlusal adjustment may be necessary to reduce the “high spots” and return the bite to harmony.
Many patients suffer from detrimental clenching and grinding habits, typically during sleep and stressful periods. This again can place excessive forces on the teeth and lead to a number of conditions:
- Periodontal bone loss
- Facial muscle soreness
- Migraine headaches
- Temperomandibular joint pain (aka TMJ pain or disorder)
- Tooth pain
- Worn or cracked teeth
A custom-made protective appliance called a bite splint or night guard can be made to wear at night to help prevent and alleviate some of these conditions. Dr. Johnson may recommend occlusal therapy as part of your conservative and preventative periodontal treatment.
