How Does Crown Lengthening Improve Oral Health?

Having excess gum tissue or a higher gum-to-tooth ratio is often referred to as a “gummy smile.” In these cases, a specialized periodontal procedure known as crown lengthening is performed. This surgical treatment reduces the amount of gum tissue and exposes more tooth structure. Crown lengthening, or a “gum lift,” creates a more balanced, healthier smile, and may be an important part of your treatment plan. As periodontal specialists, Dr. Patrick Johnson and Dr. Sausha Toghranegar offer two types of crown lengthening procedures, esthetic and functional. Our doctors and entire staff are committed to providing the high standard of care and level of excellence you deserve for a healthy, even smile.

Crown Lengthening Procedures Address Different Needs

Crown lengthening is used to address different oral health needs. Your general dentist may refer you to us for either esthetic crown lengthening or functional crown lengthening.

Esthetic Crown Lengthening ›

Performed to remove excess gum tissue, and recontour the gum line for a more balanced, even smile. At times, the underlying bone may also be reduced and smoothed to create a more esthetic appearance.

Functional Crown Lengthening ›

Performed to enable the placement of a filling, crown or bridge restoration. When decay or damage to a tooth is located below the gum line, a small amount of gum tissue and bone are removed. This exposes greater surface area on the tooth, enabling access for treatment and placement of a restoration.

Crown lengthening offers several benefits to your oral health. It creates better symmetry for your smile, and reduces the risk of decay and gum disease. It can also be a necessary step in restoring health to a tooth that has suffered damage below the gum line. As periodontists, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Sausha have extensive training and expertise in performing crown lengthening. Our goal is to make you feel comfortable and relaxed when getting the periodontal care you need for a healthy, attractive smile.
